Local Advances for Sustainability and Equality
The challenges that 2020 has delivered have shined new lights on sustainability, equality, and working locally. The UN's General Assembly Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) were designed as a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all," and this is exactly what we need!
Although SDGs are global initiatives, at the September 2020 American Leadership in Advancing Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals, hosted by The UN General Assembly, Brookings Institution, and the United Nations Foundation, there was a great deal of discussion on how the work of local institutions is vital to creating solutions.
Invited to the event were US governors, mayor, business leaders, university leaders, and more local representatives. This gave everyone the opportunity to share and learn from each other as these local leaders are creating solutions and dealing with issues that have global impacts.
Accounting to Bookings Institution, there were 6 key takeaways:
- Local leadership is critical for global progress.
- Equity is at the heart of the agenda.
- Climate change and the SDGs are a crucial part of the recovery process.
- Leadership is coming from all quarters across America.
- Partnerships are necessary for addressing interdependencies.
- Hope is the catalyst for a better future.
